District of Columbia Wins National Program of the Year Award

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) selected the DC Department of Corrections and Unity Health Care to receive its annual Program of the Year Award for its discharge planning program. DC was the first site to receive intensive technical assistance and consulting from COCHS to launch this new health care model for inmates in the District's jail facilities.

DC Department of Corrections Director Devon Brown announced the Department’s new partnership with Unity Health Care to institute an innovative model of Community Oriented health care services for individuals detained at the District's detention facilities.

D.C. Inmates' Health Care Will Continue Outside of Jail

The D.C. jail will become one of the first correctional facilities in the country to provide inmates with medical care that will follow them once they are no longer behind bars. The program will offer men and women incarcerated in the city's main detention center continuity of primary and specialty care after they are released. The approach, modeled on a successful project in central Massachusetts, was announced yesterday by Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) and other District officials.
